Flip-flops can only take us so far in climbing! Luckily, in 1985, Charles Cole, the founder of Five Ten, decided to put climbing shoe rubber on a pair of trainers, and approach shoes were born. The North Face was founded in 1966 by Doug Tompkins and Susie Tompkins, a pair of climbers and backpackers, who decided to open a high-performance equipment store in San Francisco.
